Asian Art of Peace specializes in sourcing artistically designed handmade products in Southeast Asia.

We (the two of us) travel to villages & cities throughout the region handpicking one-of-a-kind pieces of silk, silver, bags & other interesting finds that catch our eye. We feel that dealing directly with the local craftspeople allows us to make a direct connection with the different cultures and foster ongoing symbiotic relationships.

As they say in the markets of Asia....

"OUR STORY"

Sally & Michael Clark

We fell in love with the culture and people of S.E. Asia over the course of several winters teaching English in Northern Thailand.

During this period we developed an appreciation for the artistry and patience so evident in the beautiful products created in this region of the world, and thus began Asian Art of Peace. Our aim as a small enterprise is to buy from and support local cottage industries located in peaceful villages throughout the countryside of S.E. Asia. We feel that this direct connection to the people avoids worker exploitation and at the same time allows us to bring you beautifully handmade unique products at reasonable prices.

We hope that the peaceful surroundings in which these products are made will touch the lives of those who purchase them.

Our Sources

These are just a few of the people that make this venture possible.

Muay is the happiest Thai woman we know and provides us with gorgeous handwoven silks from Thailand and Laos. We can never leave her shop until we have joined her for a cup of cha!

Husband & wife jewelers Pong & Eew create beautiful pieces using handmade hill tribe silver.

Senmee, a young Lahu woman, designs and makes many of our decorative hand-embroidered bags.

Num and her workers make our Thai silk bags, cushion covers and cell phone bags in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Giving Back

Cause & Effect
By supporting local cottage industries and people working in non-exploitive conditions, selling at a fair price, reinvesting & donating a portion of profits to aid local Asian needs...

Our Hope Is ....
To contribute in a small way, to a circle of peaceful interaction between people of different cultures.

Sterling silver and handmade hill tribe silver from Northern Thailand

A note about Thai hill tribe silver – Unlike standard sterling silver which is 92.5% silver, hill tribe silver contains more than 95% silver. The higher silver content creates an attractive low luster finish and is very often blackened to lend an antique look and give the appearance of an amulet, which is believed to bring good luck and protection to the wearer. Every piece is delicately and uniquely handmade by a Northern Thai craftsperson who is a member of a hill tribe village.

Silk Scarves

Beautiful handmade and handwoven silks from Thailand, Laos & Vietnam

Silk Hangings

Every piece of handwoven silk is a timeless, unique work of art from the hands of a rural Thai or Lao woman. Since it is artwork produced by a human, it forever carries an imprint of the character, thoughts, emotions, feelings, spirit and life of the weaver. Unlike machine made silk, which is “perfect”, its imperfection is the heart of its beauty and the proof of its human creator.

This weaving process has been passed down from mother to daughter for many generations. Symbolic figures of Buddhism, animals and people, both obvious and abstract are woven into the patterns. These women traditionally weave on looms located under the eaves of their houses in between tending to their families and chores. It can take up to two months to create one of these beautiful works of art.

These hangings also make lovely table and bed runners. The lighter weight pieces can be worn as scarves or shawls. We have noted the various uses in each description and also listed weights to give you a sense of the silk density.
